Murallas Medievales y Puerta de San Ramón

La Puerta de San Ramón es una de las entradas históricas de Escalona, ubicada en el recinto amurallado que protegía la villa en la Edad Media. Su ubicación estratégica en la muralla la convierte en un símbolo clave de la defensa de la ciudad. A lo largo de los siglos, fue un punto de entrada y salida tanto para los habitantes de lalocalidad como para los comerciantes y viajeros.

La puerta refleja una mezcla de estilos arquitectónicos, con influencias principalmente góticas y mudéjares, que son características de la región. En sus primeros tiempos, no estaba abierta todo el tiempo. Servía para aliviar el tráfico que se concentraba en la Puerta del Río, especialmente durante las ferias o en acontecimientos especiales cuando había más movimiento en la entrada principal.

Un camino empinado llevaba (y sigue llevando) hasta el inicio del puente sobre el río Alberche, y este acceso, alejado de la puerta principal, confería a esta zona un carácter más auténtico y menos expuesto al paso del tiempo.

La muralla que rodea la villa tiene una longitud de 1.500 metros, y esta parte es la más grande que se puede ver sin obstáculos. En este tramo, se aprecia su simplicidad imponente, un reflejo de la funcionalidad y la fuerza que necesitaba la fortificación para proteger la villa. La Puerta de San Ramón, con sus arcos de piedra abovedada y el sello medieval del Concejo de Escalona, sigue siendo uno de los puntos más representativos de la historia medieval de la localidad.

San Ramon Gate is one of Escalona's most emblematic structures. It was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and it was restored, this gate forms part of the medieval wall surrounding the town, it was built after the Reconquista by order of King Alfonso VI. The purpose of these walls was to defend the town against the Almohad threat, and their construction was carried out by Diego and Domingo Álvarez, who received the “Carta Puebla de Escalona” and he was responsible for repopulating of the town.

Today San Ramon Gate continues to be an important witness to Escalona's medieval history.

San Ramon Gate is one of Escalona's historic entrances, its located in the walled enclosure that protected the town in the Middle Ages. Its strategic location, makes this a symbol of the city's defense. Over the centuries, it served as an entry and exit point for both local residents and merchants and travelers.

The gate reflects a mix of architectural styles, with Gothic and Mudejar influences, these are characteristic of the region. Before, it was not open all the time. It served to ease the traffic that concentrated at the River Gate, especially during festivals, or special events when the main entrance was busier.

A steep road connected (and continue connecting) to the beginning of the bridge over the Alberche River, and this access, which is far from the main gate gave this area a more authentic character and it was less exposed to the passage of time.

The wall that surrounds the town is 1,500 meters long, and this section is the longest that can be seen without obstacle. In this section, you can see its extraordinary simplicity, a reflection of the functionality and strength that the fortification needed to protect the town. San Ramon Gate with its stoned arches and the medieval seal of the Escalona Council, continues to be one of the most representative points of the town's medieval history.
